This year, GAAPP has partnered with Aspergillosis Trust UK to develop an international awareness campaign for World Aspergillosis Day (February 3, 2025).

  • Global Aspergillosis Cases: An estimated 3 million people globally are affected by chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). (1)
  • Invasive Aspergillosis (IA): It occurs in approximately 1-2% of patients with hematological malignancies or undergoing bone marrow transplantation and in up to 20% of patients with high-risk conditions in intensive care units (ICUs). (2)
  • Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA): ABPA affects 1-3% of asthma patients globally and 7-15% of patients with cystic fibrosis. This translates to approximately 4.8 million individuals worldwide. (1-2)

What is Aspergillosis?

The term Aspergillosis covers a range of conditions. These are lifelong, fungal lung infections which are due to the fungus Aspergillus. These cause allergic reactions, making it difficult to breathe. They may cause lung damage (erosion of lung tissue/cavities) instead or as well. This causes loss of lung function and difficulty breathing. Aspergillosis often affects people with asthma, especially those with severe asthma. It seems to make asthma worse. Learn more

World Aspergillosis Day 2025

This year, we created a series of images and Reels for social media to raise global awareness of Aspergillosis among the general public. To maximize their impact, GAAPP collaborated with 15 of its member organizations specializing in respiratory conditions often comorbid with Aspergillosis. This partnership ensured that the awareness materials were tailored to local communities, translated into their native languages, and adapted to their cultural contexts.

About Aspergillos Trust

Aspergillosis Trust is a patient advocacy group. It is run by patients and carers in the UK and the EU. It is a rare debilitating and sometimes deadly infection. It can attack people of any age. Aspergillosis Trust (AT) also raise funds for desperately needed research. They are a patient-led group, committed to working with anyone who has an interest in supporting our work or learning from our experiences.

The Aspergillosis Trust is a leading organization dedicated to supporting patients, raising awareness, and creating educational content, as well as contributing to ongoing research (as of 2025). We encourage you to learn more about their work and explore their extensive library of multilingual resources.
