Bronchiectasis Understanding and Research on Daily Experiences and Needs or The BURDEN initiative is a research project to examine the impact of Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis (NCFBE) on the everyday life of people living with NCFBE and their caregivers. It is also commonly referred to as bronchiectasis (without cystic fibrosis) or just bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a chronic, often progressive lung disease characterized by irreversible and abnormal widening of the bronchi and chronic symptoms.
Are you a person with COPD, atopic dermatitis, or chronic cough and want to tell your health journey or treatment story? GAAPP is collecting short video testimonials and is interested in hearing from you! Recording your story takes approximately 30 minutes and can be done using your smartphone.

GAAPP Publications and Conference Presentations
The GAAPP team participated in the #ERSCongress2024 in Vienna sharing the patient and caregiver perspectives with our many collaborators and reporting the results of research we contributed to.
• We shared the results of a GAAPP-led international patient and provider #communitysurvey highlighting the importance of coordinating care for comorbid #T2I conditions especially in this age of #biologics and the important role of primary care clinicians and patients in ensuring communication between different specialists.
“Multi-morbidity in Type 2 Disease: A Patient and Providers Survey by Ruth Tal-Singer (Media, United States), Donna Gardner, Brian Lipworth, Alberto Papi, Dave Singh, Mary Jo Strobel, Robert Wise, Tonya Winders”
Our CEO Tonya Winders co-authored a presentation on an international survey highlighting the need for improved patient education on identifying COPD flare ups and seeing care when appropriate. “How patients act in response to COPD exacerbations: results from a multi-country survey by Frits M.E. Franssen (Maastricht, Netherlands), Ruth Young, Job F M Van Boven, Michael Crooks, Marie Eckerd, Jad El Khoury, Megan Grobert, John Hurst, Ann Hutchinson, John Linnell, Daiana Stolz, Tonya Winders, Jing Zhang, Clementine Nordon.”

Members of the Chronic Airways Assessment Test Clinical and Scientific Advisory Panel met with members of the CAAT Governance Board at the ERS conference to discuss the strategy for completing the dissemination and validation of the CAAT in asthma and expanding the validation effort in non-CF bronchiectasis (NCFB) in collaboration with EMBARC BRIDGE investigators.
We are grateful to the corporate supporters of multiple CAAT projects: AstraZeneca, Boehringer Ingelheim, Chiesi, GSK, Sanofi/Regeneron and Roche/Genentech who recognize the importance of this simple 8-question tool for evaluating the health status of people with COPD, asthma, and other lung conditions.
COPD Index
The COPD Index was presented at the 2024 European Respiratory Society Congress on September 7th. The Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies developed the index to provide a 360-degree understanding of approaches to COPD. The COPD Index is a very detailed data report of 34 countries, with over 40 different factors of policy evaluated. The index includes 1500 different data points on which each country is evaluated. You can find out how a country is doing on their tobacco, air quality, and vaccination policies, to name a few.
September highlight was the opportunity to see many of you in person in Vienna, Austria between the 5th and 11th of September, which I believe will drive new impactful research collaborations among the many members and supporters of GAAPP.
We are grateful to the respondents to the GAAPP 2024 Member Organization Survey that highlighted the growth and diversity of GAAPP (Figure): The results informed the 2025 strategy for each of our 4 pillars strategy which we shared with you at the GAAPP Summit. For Research, we learned that most MOs (87%) are interested in research (see table on types of projects) but 65% lack Human Subject Research Training and would appreciate training and support. Research capability development is therefore one of the top priorities for our research team as we aim to enable recruitment for studies, surveys, and focus groups as well as implementation of local research projects in compliance with global human subject research guidelines.
