GAAPP 2021 Scientific Meeting Summary
Thanks to all who could participate in our 5th scientific meeting on July 9th. Over 30 global patient advocates gathered for the GAAPP Annual Scientific Meeting. GAAPP hosted 5 scientific presentations of allergies, CSU, AD, Asthma, COPD, COVID, and guidelines update conducted by leading Health Care Professionals and Researchers.
Here is a short summary of each speaker’s contribution.
Dr. Dana Wallace–Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Prevention Methods in Allergy
Dr. Wallace shared the most recent evidence related to breastfeeding, vitamin D supplementation, pre & probiotics, skin moisturizing & immunotherapy as methods of prevention in allergy. To view the recording, click here.
Dr. Marcus Maurer—Choosing a Biologic for CSU & AD
Dr. Maurer outlined the latest approaches to phenotype CSU & AD patients & appropriately selected biological treatments for those with uncontrolled disease. He also highlighted the work of the UCARE network to raise awareness & support the patient community to accelerate diagnosis & care. To view the recording, click here.
Dr. David Price—Quality Improvement in Asthma & COPD
Prof. Price exposed the fact that >20% of patients are receiving OCS on an annual basis. He explained the CONQUEST program to establish quality standards in asthma & COPD in UK & USA. To view the recording, click here.
Dr. Arzu Yorgancioglu & Dr. John Hurst—GINA & GOLD Updates
Prof. Yorgancioglu highlighted the 2021 GINA updates focusing on SABA overuse & changes to Steps 1&2, as well as the two potential paths to reduce SABA use. To view the recording, click here. Prof. Hurst discussed the GOLD guidelines & COVID impact specifically. He charged GOLD with greater attention on LMIC & encouraged the adoption of the WHO Minimum Set of Primary Care Interventions as a baseline of care provided. To view the recording, click here.
Dr. Tobias Welte—COVID-19–What is next?
Prof. Welte spotlighted the vaccination rates among different countries & regions across the world. He encouraged vaccination of children & asserted we will likely need annual COVID boosters to address the new variants. Finally, he proposed restrictive travel policies to further incentivize vaccination & suggested it is estimated 20-30% will never agree to be vaccinated regardless of programs offered.
